Not All Bank Failures Are Created Equal

Remembering the bank founded by Jackie Robinson and how regulators dealt with its demise — This month, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation announced its seizure of New York’s First Republic Bank. The bank’s failure was second only to that of Washington Mutual’s collapse amid the 2008 financial crisis. As was the case with Washington Mutual in 2008, JPMorgan Chase stepped in to purchase First Republic.

Greatest Hits: Supreme Court Edition

Revisiting Supreme Court posts from The Journeyman archives — With the Supreme Court back in the news of late concerning a variety of issues, here’s a recap of some of my previous posts on the high court. Hopefully you’ll find this a helpful refresher. On stolen court seats Conventional wisdom suggests that Senator Mitch McConnell’s decision to block then-president Barack Obama’s appointment of…

That Old-Time Religion

How a meeting with a country preacher-turned-politician and the Southern Baptist Convention’s stealth church introduced me to Bible Belt politics — Although I haven’t visited my home state of Arkansas in more than a decade, the days I spent in that state’s ecosystem are the foundation for how I see the world. More than anything, that time in the complex culture of the Bible Belt informs how I view politics.

Elon is Doing a Great Job at Twitter — Just Ask His Fans

Some people can’t handle the truth — Things haven’t gone very well for Elon Musk since he bought Twitter. The social media giant’s financial picture, which was already on shaky ground, has worsened under his leadership. After paying more than double Twitter’s valuation, Musk acknowledges that the company is worth less than half of the $44 billion…

The Lehman Brothers Mandela Effect

The failure of Silicon Valley Bank highlights our false memory of the last financial crisis — When Silicon Valley Bank failed earlier this month, my first reaction was to compare the venture capital industry’s financial institution of choice to the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. “It’s Lehman all over again,” one of my former trading colleagues said on a phone call later that day. Of…

When Origin Stories Collide

How my search for my family’s roots intersected with the Cherokee Nation — and The 1619 Project — Earlier this month, on an episode of the PBS program “Finding Your Roots,” Angela Davis, the 1960s activist and social justice icon, learned that one of her forebears came to America on the Mayflower: This segment of the series, hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the director of the…

Sure, Joe Biden Is Old. That Doesn’t Mean He Should Step Aside.

Even at 80 years of age, Joe Biden is the Democratic Party’s best chance of holding onto the White House — If he runs and wins the 2024 presidential election, Joe Biden will be 82 at the beginning of his second term. Should he complete another four years in office, Dark Brandon will be 86. …

Why is Elon Musk Wrecking Twitter?

The answer lies in the greatest finance film of all time — It is difficult to imagine how Elon Musk will ever make a dime from his acquisition of Twitter. It’s only a few months into his investment in the platform, but he’s already beating the bushes for help paying the $13 billion in debt he incurred buying Twitter. For reasons known…

The Distinguished Gentleman…From New York

Well, it looks like Herschel Walker can rest easy. Georgia’s most famous running back no longer bears the title, or shame, of being the most prolific liar in the Republican Party. When historians write the story of the 2022 midterms, few will recall Herschel Walker’s lying about being a member…
